Every academic understands the importance of quality publications for a scholarly career, but graduate schools rarely provide training in writing articles for international publications, and many scholars write up their research without a clear understanding of how editors evaluate submissions, or what makes a manuscript successful. Major journals receive far more submissions than they can publish and reject more than 90% per cent of the material they receive. Editors often start with three questions: Who will read this? What does it offer that’s new? Why does it matter? If a manuscript's early pages fail to answer these questions, the author is likely to receive a “desk rejection” politely saying the piece has no prospect of success at that journal.
